S18- Canadiens' Strategy for Trade Deadline [WB8]

2021-06-10

With the trade deadline only a few days away, GM Ryan Torrie and his staff are working away on adjusting a lineup that has surprised many this season. When the season first started, it looked like another throw away year and another potential first overall pick, but with the revitalization of Saku Koivu and Marty Turco, the Canadiens are battling for a playoff spot. The Canadiens currently sit in fifth in the conference and four points back of division leading Ottawa Senators.

“The team has put themselves in a spot where we would like to add. We will have to do some maneuvering because we are up against the cap, but if we find the right fit, we will make it work. When the season began, we planned on being sellers at the deadline, but the play of this team has changed our strategy for Sunday,” GM Torrie told the media at this morning’s press conference.

At the press conference, the Canadiens introduced their latest acquisitions, Sergei Samsonov and Tim Connolly. Samsonov arrived from St. Louis in exchange for Jiri Hurdler and a future second round pick. “Samsonov brings speed and scoring to the left side, which will help our power play. He will likely line up with Koivu and Todd Bertuzzi on the first line.” Coach Tom Renney told  the media.

Connolly arrived from Edmonton for Rickard Wallin and a future second round pick. “Connolly is a pure rental, but he brings strong scoring and passing skills that will help our team down the middle,” GM Torrie said. “Tim will likely line up with Mike York and Shane Doan on the second line and will be our number centre on the power play” coach Renney said.

As for the strategy for the deadline, GM Torrie told the media that his team is looking to tinker around the edges and does not want to upset the chemistry too much. “We will likely try to bring in one or two more players for depth, but I do not anticipate a major move prior to Sunday,” GM Torrie said.

GM Torrie said that he would likely not move any potential UFAs unless the right offer is made. The Canadiens currently set of UFAs (excluding newly acquired Connolly) includes Bertuzzi, Turco and Nolan Schafer and Ric Jackman. GM Torrie also mentioned that he would not move any future 1st round picks or prospects Patrick Kane or Nicklas Backstrom. “These guys are our future and we are not moving them for pure rentals.”

Either way It sounds like it will be exciting couple of days leading up to Sunday’s deadline.
