s18 - NYI Pipeline Report [WB3]

2021-05-03

With the salary cap squeezing virtually every decision the New York Islanders made and will have to make this offseason, they could really use some nice surprises.

To keep improving, the Isles are going to need to find value, perhaps in the way of young players on cheap contracts earning a roster spot.

Here’s a look at a few players who are in the running to do just that.

  1. Paul STASTNY – 22yrs
    Center

Currently plying his trade for the baby Islanders in Capital-District, Stastny is being groomed to be the big club’s future number 1 centerman.  With both of New York’s top two centers in Mike Modano and Jeremy Roenick on expiring contracts, the next great hope could be on a fast-track to the pros.

  2. Milan MICHALEK – 23yrs
    Right Wing

The ability to backfill players in the top-6 is something New York hadn’t done very well under the old regime.  More recently, much more emphasis is being put on acquiring young talent via trade or draft and leaving them in the AHL for as long as possible to allow for more opportunity for success.  In Michalek’s case, the expectation is that he’ll be close to taking the next step and replace the likes of Teemu Selanne on one of the top two lines on the Island.

  3. James WISNIEWSKI – 23yrs
    Defense

Wiz has been with the organization for what feels like a lifetime.  Having already played over 300 games in the AHL, the young defenseman has had a good showing in his limited opportunities at the pro level with a pair of assists and a plus-5 rating in 10 games.

  4. Martin HANZAL – 20yrs
    Center

A real steal, the hulking center (listed at 6-6, 230lbs) was pried away from the Montreal Canadiens in an offseason deal for a 2nd round pick (Nick Palmieri).  The plan is to be as patient as possible given just how young he is, but with that size, already he appears to be settling in with the CD Islanders.

Islanders’ Pipleline – A look at what’s cooking in the Junior ranks

Not much.  With a trio of left wingers in Brad Malone, Luca Caputi and Maksim Mayorov, Long Island is going to have to focus their attention in the coming years to bolstering their organizational depth at all positions.  Thankfully, as it stands, the team has a total of 10 draft picks in the coming draft – three of which are first rounders.
