s18 - Flyers Extension News & Deadline Rumblings [WB8]

2021-06-09

The Flyers sit atop the VHL Regular Season throne as this article is typed. Just like last season, the Flyers are looking to make moves that will bolster them for a playoff run. Last season, two key moves were made by acquiring Czech forwards Petr Nedved and Radek Bonk. Presently they make-up two-thirds of the Flyers second line with freshly extended Czech g.o.a.t Jaromir Jagr, and have combined for 51 goals this season.

Jagr agreed to a two-year extension with a nice raise to $7.562 million annually. The reigning Rocket Richard winner’s raise was well deserved, and is now the team’s second-highest salary to Marc Savard… for now. Alexander Ovechkin will be retained either by extension or arbitration rights, and that will certainly be a team-high deal.  The Flyers also negotiated terms on a four-year extension with Austrian sniper Thomas Vanek. At $2.672 million annually, Vanek’s contract sets him up nicely to have one of the more team friendly deals in the league. He and Ovechkin should haunt goalies for a long while.

Of contracts that still need to be negotiated, the Flyers have to extend pending RFAs Stephen Weiss and Fredrik Sjostrom. However, GM Wright hasn’t been shy about dangling them on the trade block to either improve the team or gain future assets. The same goes for a few of the team’s defencemen (Paul Mara, Patrice Brisebois, and Kim Johnsson)  in hopes of bolstering the back-end with an elite rental.

The Flyers were disappointed in fourth line center Mike Zigomanis’ decision to break contract negotiations. Zigomanis was acquired by the team with the intention of having a back-up plan for 2009-10, if the Flyers were unable to retain Manny Malhotra. That means next season Malhotra will be the Flyers top priority to extend. The lack of center depth has the Flyers considering grooming Robert Nilsson as a center, and could be tried in top-six role as early as next season. The same goes for Anthony Stewart, who has long been Nilsson’s fellow wingman in Hershey.
