S17 - Dominic Who? [WB4]

2021-02-02

So what has happened to Dominic Moore? He is coming off a breakout season in which is recorded 22 goals and 36 assists. This was the 6th best points total on the team. He then went on to score 7 goals and 19 points in the playoffs helping the Flames win their second Stanley Cup. This season in 36 games, Dominic Moore has a measly 3 goals and 5 assists. At this current scoring rate, he is on pace for a career low 17 points. Moore is in his 4th full season with the Flames, and has been a great 3rd line role player. He is known for scoring timely goals, playing solid 2-way hockey and being a good penalty killer. He has been able to play up on the 2nd line, and also has centered the number 2 power play unit in the past and has done well with increased ice time.

This season a few things have changed around Moore. Long-time winger Jason Bowen has moved on to the Boston Bruins, where he has continued his excellent play. In his place is Moore’s former RW Jere Lehtinen.  On the other side, has been tough guy Chris Neil. Neil bounced around a bit last season between the 3rd and 4th lines, but has stuck on the 3rd line this season. Across the board, the numbers a down for these 3, but Moore really stands out, and not in a good way. It becomes pretty obvious what Moore’s problem is when you break down the numbers, and it is his 4.3 shooting percentage. Moore sports a career 10.7 shooting percentage, and scored on 11.7 of his shots last season. If Moore was scoring at his career pace, he would have 8 goals right now, and be on pace for 19-20 goals on the season. This is the exact production the Flames were expecting from the 3rd line center. Hopefully Moore can get out of his slump and maybe get a few bounces his way. It may only take 1 or 2 to go in to get his confidence up and to get him scoring at his usual pace.

With the acquisition of Bobby Holik, there have been rumors of the Flames promoting Eric Fehr from the Eagles. Fehr will probably start on the 4th line if he comes up, but with 19 goals with the Eagles in 34 games, maybe he carries enough confidence to help out on the 3rd line and get Moore over the hump.
