S17 - The quarter pole [WB3]

The Flames are off to another great start, but have found themselves on the wrong side of a few games lately. The Flames are in a windows right now, and they really need to go all in as they may not get another chance for a while.  Miller, Datsyuk, Ference and Richards are all potential UFA’s at season end. If the Flames are going to do something to increase their chances, now is the time.

While the Flames remain one of the top teams in the league, they are slowly losing ground to the St Louis Blues. Scoring has fallen off a bit, while the goaltending and defense remain excellent. An opportunity has arisen that would see one of the league’s top players come to the Flames. Bobby Holik, a player that led the Whalers to the cup finals last season had become available, and the Flames joined in a trade with two other teams to get him. The Flames traded Keith Tkachuk for Holik, a move that adds some potent offence to the Flames. To Fit in Holik’s massive cap hit, the Flames have also had to waive Alexei Zhamnov. The Flames had hoped Zhamnov would be a solid addition to the team, but he was off to a rough start and was not finding the back of the net as he was expected to.

The Flames are hoping the added goal scoring Holik brings will help them win a few more close games. The Flames really don’t want to spoil the season Ryan Miller is having, as he is currently posting a 1.92 GAA and a 927 save percentage. When your goalie only allows two goals or less a game, a game breaker like Holik can really increase your chances of winning some games.

With Holik joining the Flames, Brad Richards will be moving back to left wing, and Dany Heatley will be trying out the right side. Heater has been a LW since joining the league, and is just starting to come into his own.  With a 28 goal campaign last season. Coach Bob Hartley hopes he can make the transition smoothly.

In other news, the aforementioned Dany Heatley has been the subject of a lot of trade rumors after the Holik deal. The latest rumors point to offers from multiple teams for the 25 year budding superstar. The ask from the Flames is thought to be pretty high, as the team continues its journey towards the playoffs. The return of a #1 RW is what we have been hearing, and with the Flames cap situation it would have to be someone making the same or less than Heater. The latest rumors have the Flames adding a 2nd rd pick to sweeten the deal for the right player.
