S15- You are the Biggest Loser! [WB4]

2020-05-23

“What a winner he is!”said fellow Habs fan upon learning that Bryon Dafoe is now the team leader in the losses by a goalie. With 98 losses, Dafoe surpassed former Habs goalie Mike Richter. Dafoe managed to achieve this milestone in fewer games than Richter. It took Dafoe only 174 games to Richter’s 259. One of the biggest differences between their tenures in Montreal has been that Ritcher played on a winning team, while Dafoe has often been the bright spot on dismal teams. Since arriving in Montreal, Dafoe has had one winning season with a record of 28-25-3 in 2001-02. . Last season he went 7-22-3.

“Bryon has been a key piece in our rebuild. I feel bad for him. This is a milestone he does not deserve. For two seasons, Bryon was our best goalie,” GM Ryan Torrie told the media. “We have been grateful for this leadership through these terrible seasons and I really hope we can help him play for a contender,” Torrie said.

“I think you need to look at this way; Bryon is third all-time in games played (174), fourth all-time in wins (56), fourth all-time in shutouts (6) and 2nd all-time in saves (5335). He is the best goalie to come from the United Kingdom. We are happy he is in our organization,” coach Gerald Gallant told the media following the morning skate.

Upon learning about the new milestone Dafoe told the media “It is not something that I am honoured about but I have had a great time here leading this young core. I anticipate that this team will be contending one day. I hope I am here to be part of it.”

“That one season was his best season ever. He is not a great goalie. The Habs deserve better,” an angry fan said following the milestone announcement. Only time will tell where Dafoe finishes on the Habs all-time lists, but it is safe to say he is the biggest loser.
