S16 - Motor City Winged Wheelers [WB6]

2020-10-17

Detroit, the Motor City, is in the middle a sport overhaul with the Red Wings, Tigers, and Lions are in the process of their rebuilds, but it is not all doom and gloom in the Detroit sport landscape, the Pistons are coming off an NBA title and continue to be a strong team in the NBA.

Since the 2000-01 season, the Red Wings have been in a re-tooling/rebuilding phase, but unlike most rebuilds or re-tooling projects the Red Wings started their process lacking first round picks for the first few seasons. The Red Wings had a cupboard full of mid to bottom tier prospects, including top prospect, Nikolai Antropov. The Red Wings organization rosters consisted of veterans and youth, including Radek Bonk, Marin St. Louis, Kimmo Timonen, Dan Clearly, and others.

Dan Clearly over the last six seasons has now been joined by Miikka Kiprusoff, Manny Fernandez, and Antero Niittymaki in goal. Pavel Kubina, Marek Zidlicky, Kevin Klein, Greg Zanon, Mark Streit, and veteran Brian Rafalski on the back end and the upfront the Red Wings have added Jordin Tootoo, Brandon Prust, and several other bottom six type talents including PJ Axelsson. But, it is now about what the Red Wings have on the roster currently, but what the Red Wings have coming in their pipeline. Players like Sidney Crosby, Blake Wheeler, Cory Schneider, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic as their main future cornerstones. Luc Bourdon, Adam McQuaid, Jeff Schultz, and Jordie Benn have the potential to earn spots on the Red Wings back end in the future. Players such as Brad Richardson, Cal O’Reilly, Philippe Dupuis could find a home in Adirondack or even in the bottom-none for the Wings in the future. Taking their draft pick capital into play and the Red Wings will have the ability to add several top tier prospects with six first-round picks and ten second-round picks over the next five seasons.

Now, six seasons after transacting, drafting, and building the Red Wings are seeing some progress in their rebuilding as the club has already surpassed last season’s point total of 42 points, and only a point behind their 2003-04 point total of 45. If the Red Wings can keep the process continuing and use their AP points properly, the Red Wings will be back in the playoff picture.
