S12 - Ilya Kovalchuk [WB2]

2019-04-25

Tampa Bay - A couple of years ago, before they flooded the league, russian born players were mysterious and thought of as cyborgs (extremely skilled, precise but showing no emotions). Ilya Kovalchuk would be the Alpha Male of those cyborgs, since he was raise to become just that, in the same way Tiger Woods’s father did with the legend.

Kovy was born on April 15 1983 in the small town of Tver , 2 hours north of Moscow. Skills was in his blood from birth, since is father was a basketball superstar for the Soviet national squad and his mother was a dentist. The mental approach of athletics was key for Kovalchuk senior, so very young Ilya was instructed to exercise and stretch. He did excel as a young player in Russia but seeing is countryman Pavel Bure flourish in Vancouver was the match that lit the fire in him.

Ilya’s father Valeri, made sure to create the perfect series of exercise and training for his son. That hard and painful training help Ilya in giving him a sledgehammer slap shot, rockets behind his skates and a really strong body to power through the opponents. Valeri was inspired by the training of the legendary boxer Ivan Drago. They were able to use the same gym has Ivan with a few phone calls to some the right mobster with connections.

At 15 years old, he traveled to Halifax in  Canada to join the Moosehead. There, he joined Martin Havlat, Jay Bouwmeester, John-Micheal Liles and the inuit phenom Jordin Tootoo. They played really well as a squad last year but  Ilya had an amazing first year finishing in the top 5 in goals scored with 46 and in the top 15 in points with 88. After this amazing season, the Tampa bay Lightning made him their selection at the first spot in the draft and will be a solid base for the building of a competitive team in the sunshine state with the great swede Henrik Zettererg. Kovalchuk will play 2 more seasons in Junior to perfect his skill set to be ready to jump straight with the big club. Ouellet do not think that Kovy will need to age in the AHL, and will adapt really well in the league with the big boys.
