s26 - No gambling for Vegas

By David Zammit (GOLDEN KNIGHTS) On Sunday 24th March 2024 / 8:48pm

Vegas, NV - The Vintage Hockey League’s trade deadline has well past and one of the top teams decided to sit pat.

The move, or lack their of, is surprising when you look at Vegas Golden Knights General Manager David Zammit’s history since taking over the team about a decade ago.

He’s always been active at the deadline either adding pieces to help his team bulk up for a run or selling off pieces to help with a retool or rebuild.

One thing that’s really stuck out with Zammit’s approach I’ve noticed is he tries to deal off pending UFAs at or ahead of the deadline, especially ones that are talented. This started in his rookie season with the likes of Joe Thornton and Josef Boumedienne. It tends to only land 2nd rounders or sometimes prospects like Mason Raymond, but if your team isn’t in it to win it, what’s the point in holding the pending UFA.

“I think it would be malpractice to not at least explore the idea of shipping out guys that don’t have a long-term future within your organization,” Zammit said following the deadline. “There’s a case by case basis for it, but even for the best players you have to ponder it at least.”

Well he’s certainly more than pondered it. At the time he moved Thornton, he was arguably the best player in the league if not, at minimum a top five player. However, why didn’t he follow a similar approach this go around with star defenceman Alex Pietranglo?

“Funny you ask, we actually had an inquiry from an Eastern Conference team about him,” he said. “Although with our team playing great this year, my ask was big because if we’re going to do damage in the playoffs, it will be because he’s playing like the best defenceman in the league.”

You could also look at one of his pending UFAs that he did deal earlier in the year in Patrik Berglund. He attached him in a massive deal that landed Filppula and Kovalchuk. That trade also put the team at the cap and sort of fulfilled their needs.

“I didn’t see anywhere that I needed to upgrade,” he said. “Sure I would have loved another scoring winger but we didn’t have the cap room to do it.”

s26 - All eyes on Vegas and Owen Sound for playoffs

By David Zammit (GOLDEN KNIGHTS) On Sunday 24th March 2024 / 8:47pm

Vegas, NV/Owen Sound, ONT - Well, well, well what do we have here… the Vintage Hockey League season is on the verge of wrapping up in the coming days and the Vegas Golden Knights franchise has to be pleased with a tremendous season at both levels.

Unless things change, it appears both teams will be amongst the elite of elites in the league. Owen Sound is sitting first in the entire league, three points up with only five games remaining. While Vegas is in a dogfight for the division and president’s trophy with the Arizona Coyotes and San Jose Sharks. The trio of teams are 1, 2, 3 in the league standings we’ll clear of anyone else. Only three points separate the formidable three, with Vegas playing Arizona next game.

“I liked our chances at the AHL level coming into the season,” Vegas Golden Knights General Manager David Zammit said. “We had several key returnees and I also made sure to bolster the AHL team with lots of skill up front.”

The returnees of Anderson, Copp, Grossman, Mojzis, Voynov, Bergfors, Pelech, Reddox coupled with the additions of Raymond, Goligoski, Nilsson, and Barzal have turned the team into a juggernaut. Through 78 games they have 121 points with a plus goal differentials of 95.

Jump over to the otherside of things and the Golden Knights third in the league in the standings with 99 points through 79 games.

It’s been a similar story at the pro level with star returnees in Pietrangelo, Stafford, Bailey. Mix that in with the key acquisition of Kesler, Filppula, Kovalchuk, and Mason and you have a very good top six with a superstar goalie.

“We’ve had a few dips this season but wire-to-wire we’ve been right at the top of the standings and I’m hoping we can finally break through this postseason,” he said.

s26 - Another Vezina in Vegas? [WB9]

By David Zammit (GOLDEN KNIGHTS) On Thursday 14th March 2024 / 2:24am

Vegas, NV - The Vegas Golden Knights are gunning for their third Vezina Trophy in four years.

The campaign for it at this point seems very well with over three quarters of the Vintage Hockey League’s regular season already concluded.

Vegas sits at 40-18-10 to sit atop the leagues standings through 68 games.

One of the big reasons is goalie Steve Mason who’s been all-world since arriving in the Sin City this past offseason.

“We struck out big time in free agency on the guys we were targeting for forward and defence,” Vegas Golden Knights General Manager David Zammit recalled. “We’re extremely excited to win the most important free agent signing from last offseason. We knew in the moment having a stud goalie was critical but we didn’t expect him to be the best in the league.”

Through 48 games in net for Golden Knights, the Canadian has gone 28-13-6 and leads the league with a .927 save percent and a 2.46 goals-against-average.

These stats eerily similar to what Vegas received from Marc-Andre Fleury in 2012-13 and 2013-14 when he won the Vezina in back-to-back seasons.

“It’s wild how lucky we’ve been goaltending wise the last half decade,” he said. “It sure makes up for the early days when we had Jimmy Waite, Niklas Bäckström, Alex Stalock, Roberto Luongo, and more that just never worked out.”

The season still has lots of runway left but it could add another goalie award to the franchises trophy case… but my sense is the team wants a different award, something that’s been elusive for them for a decade now.

Just two seasons ago Vegas won the Presidents Trophy and they might have a shot at it again.

“The awards are nice and all but can we please get to a cup final and win one?,” he said. “I’ve spent a lot of energy building this team from the ground up several times now and nothing seems to work… perhaps this time it will.”

s26 - Decent Half Season in Sin City [WB7]

By David Zammit (GOLDEN KNIGHTS) On Monday 4th March 2024 / 1:01am

Vegas, NV - A four game losing streak for the Vegas Golden Knights has put a slight damper on the teams opening half of the season.

Before the recent dip in play the team was 29-11-8 and sitting right at the top of the Vintage Hockey League’s standings… they’re still third in the league now but they’re also behind two teams within their same division.

If they hold their current position it will give them opening round home ice in the playoffs but they’re better to try and track down San Jose and Arizona for the division and league lead.

“I knew this dip in play would happen eventually, every team at some point in their season goes through a bit of a rough patch and we need to stem the tide here before it really costs us some positioning in the standings,” Vegas Golden Knights General Manager David Zammit said. “I worried a bit when I made the big deal to pickup Val Filppula and Ilya Kovalchuk that the team would slump a bit and they didn’t right away. Might have to do some more tinkering though.”

Vegas has been propped up the Vezina front runner Steve Mason so far. The 28-year-old is enjoying his best season ever to this point posting a .926 save percentage coupled with a 2.45 goals-against average winning 22 games. The team was lucky to win a small bidding war in the offseason and sign the number 1 tender to a team friendly four-year contract.

Not only are they receiving unbelievable goaltending, they have a formidable duo of top line forwards producing at atop the league in Josh Bailey and Drew Stafford. The former is third in the league in assists and seventh in points with 57. And Stafford sits tied for 12th in the league in points with 56.

They’ll need Kesler, Filppula, Kovalchuk, and Granlund to up their game if they want to make a legit run this spring.

s26 - Prospecting Golden in Vegas [WB6]

By David Zammit (GOLDEN KNIGHTS) On Monday 26th February 2024 / 2:50am

Vegas, NV - The Vegas Golden Knights continue to have a health pipeline of prospects either in the AHL or in the CHL.

The biggest prized piece somehow fell into their laps this past draft when they selected Matt Barzal with the 10th overall selection. In a re-draft, he should be going just outside the top five, and Vegas will happily take where they landed him.

Since then, they turned him pro right away at the age of 18 and he hasn’t looked out of place at all in the AHL with Owen Sound. He’s playing as a second line centre currently and has registered 27 points in 41 games, with 13 of them being goals.

“He’s been amazing for us down there to start his professional career, we hope this is just a glimpse into his future with the organization,” Vegas Golden Knights General Manager David Zammit said.

It’s hard to project in this league at times, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he isn’t a top line forward in the NHL within 4-5 seasons.

The next top dog and another forward is Kevin Fiala, who the Golden Knights scooped up with the 16th overall selection in last years draft. The talented Swiss product’s transition to the AHL hasn’t been as easy as Barzal’s. Perhaps last year Vegas should have sent him back to the CHL. He only played in 42 games with Owen Sound and registered six points. After a tough rookie season, he’s looked good this year racking up 13 goals and 20 points in 37 games. I’d bet he’ll be a second liner within the same timeline as Barzal.

Now for the defensive side, Rasmus Andersson another recent draftee from this past draft. Vegas took him 33rd overall and are hoping he’ll be a pro with some nice upside in the future. He’s in the CHL this year, and maybe next year too, but he should become a bottom four defenceman at the NHL level within five or so seasons.

Similar things can be said about Vlad Gavrikov, who was taken a few picks later in the second round after Andersson. Although he should be more physical and stout defensively. Doubt he has near the offensive game as Rasmus. If he pans into a Roman Polak, maybe even a touch better, perfect.

And last is forward Val Nichushkin, who is a second rounder from three drafts ago. The 20 year old has played fourth line minutes for Owen Sound this year. His offence has been non-existent which isn’t ideal. He’s slotted to be a bottom six guy in the NHL at peak but he’ll need to score at the AHL first.

s26 - The Good, Bad, and Ugly [WB5]

By David Zammit (GOLDEN KNIGHTS) On Sunday 18th February 2024 / 5:38pm

Vegas, NV - As the Vintage Hockey League approaches it’s midway point, a quartet of teams stand atop the standings all looking like strong contenders for the Stanley Cup this year.

Although we can only focus on three of them for this article to begin. Let’s start with the Minnesota Wild who have scored the most goals, have the best goals differential, and are tied for the most wins in the league.

What makes this feat even more remarkable is they only have two forwards rated over 80+. The Wild also don’t own any of the leagues elite goalies but they’re getting results in the net regardless.

Okay now onto the team that’s leading the league in points percentage and tied for the most wins too, the New Jersey Devils. Chris fought hard in free agency to convince MVP calibre David Krejci to return and since then it’s been all golden for them. He also made two other big FA forward picks ups in James Neal and Alex Tanguay.

Alright and the other Chris in San Jose… has he finally figured out how to use a stacked top nine to his advantage? Who knows but we’re about to find out as he has 7 forwards already over the 20 threshold.

Okay so that was the good, what’s the bad and ugly? Two teams fall under this category currently imo… the two biggest basement dwellers and underachievers.

I’d like to know what is going on in Hartford. GM Dustin Funk I believe has the most regular season wins in VHL history and his team is out here look like his Buffalo Sabres in real life all of a sudden. Although the Sabres don’t have near the talent or skill Hartford has on its roster, making his placement at the bottom of the Eastern Conference baffling. Is the clock ticking in Hartford? Perhaps they need a new community to revitalize the team.

And lastly, the last place Vancouver Canucks who on paper have a team that should be competing for a playoff spot, not a team preparing themselves for irrelevancy.
