s26 - Familiar Face Set to Return [WB9]

By Chris Baker (COYOTES) On Tuesday 12th March 2024 / 5:00pm

The Phoenix Coyotes Hockey Club announced today that the team has acquired forwards Antti Miettinen and John Mitchell from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for rookie Cody Eakin and Phoenix’s 2016 third-round draft pick.

Miettinen, 36, makes his return to the franchise that drafted him and played over 400 games for from 2001-2010. “It’s an exciting time, Miettinen said.  “Some of those years were tough in the early days, it’s exciting going to a Stanley Cup contender and a franchise I know so well.”

The 6-foot, 190-pound forward has collected 18 points (8g/10a) in 65 games this season with Chicago after signing a two year deal in the offseason to play in the Windy City.  With stops in Toronto, Tampa and St.Louis after not re-signing with the Coyotes in 2010, Miettinen has been leaned on more as a role player since his days in the desert and will undoubtedly be looked upon to do more of the same with his return.  Something the veteran is “all fine with.”

In Mitchell, whatcha see is whatcha get.  He’s being brought in to play the role vacated by Eakin – center the club’s fourth line, and kill penalties.  For management, doing the job at a fraction of the cost was something that wasn’t overlooked.

“Cody has the potential to be a great player in this league, said Phoenix GM Chris Baker.  “For us he was a little mis-cast, but to his credit he never once complained or had his agent ask about his spot on the roster.  He’s an offensive minded kid and I think he’ll get a better chance to show that in Chicago - Something that was going to be tough to do here going forward.”

Conveniently being left out of the conversation was Eakin’s RFA status and what some rumoured his ask on an extension was.  Some in the know estimated that the 24-year-old was looking for a contract in the $3 million per season range.  A range that not many smart teams would be willing to accept for a fourth line player.

And so Phoenix brings in a couple of players with age and experience under their belt for what they hope is another run to the Stanley Cup.  The fact that the accountants on staff were able to balance the books being so close to the cap and bring in a pair of fresh faces is a fine piece of work.  Even if a young offensive piece went out in return for a couple of depth pieces.

s26 - Report Card Time [WB7]

By Chris Baker (COYOTES) On Tuesday 27th February 2024 / 4:40pm

The Phoenix Coyotes have passed the midpoint of the 2015-16 VHL season and sit in a playoff spot in the highly competitive Western Conference.  With 46 games down, here are grades and analysis for each Coyotes unit so far this season:

Forwards

Overall grade: A

The Coyotes have had one of the league’s deepest forward units this season, with eight players scoring 10 or more goals by the halfway mark. All four lines have offered contributions at various points, and while some have been more effective than others, the team enters the latter half of the season with confidence in its offensive production. Plus, it has three young up-and-comers having great seasons in Scottsdale (Bo Horvat 41pts, Alex Galchenyuk 36pts and Mattias Janmark 35pts) waiting in the wings.

Defensemen

Overall grade: B-

The Coyotes’ defensemen have been inconsistent at best. A unit that has the makings of an elite defensive bunch, management and fans alike continue to wonder when their breakout will happen.  By no means are they downright bad, but their also not playing up to their potential either. Inexperience could be a factor as four of the seven are still in their early 20’s.  Bringing in the veteran leadership of Toni Lydman was supposed to be an addition to the likes of Ryan Suter and Marc Staal, but due to the entire staff’s inconsistency, the 37-year-old Lydman has been relied upon far more than what was expected.

 Goalies

Overall grade: C+

On paper, the Coyotes goalies should be better.  Coming on the heels of a Vezina Trophy a season ago, expectations for Semyon Varlamov to repeat were sky high.  Unfortunately, the 28-year-old has been just “ok” on most nights and it shows in his statistics to date.  Thus far, Varlamov is on pace for his worst statistical season of his young career.  As it stands his 2.67 GAA and .919 save percentage are low-water marks.  For this team to push for a playoff spot and win a couple of rounds, it starts and ends with Varlamov.  Last season’s hopeful Juuse Saros also had high expectations and folded under the pressure.  Having only started nine games last season as a 19-year-old, his three wins weren’t good enough to keep him around.  Forced into plying his trade in the AHL, the youngster had solid results leading to his opportunity with the Coyotes this season.  Sadly, through nine games thus far, his numbers are underwhelming once again: the worst being his 2.96 GAA.  Things will need to change in the second half with more back-to-backs forcing managements hands into getting their young goaltender between the pipes for some more game action.

Overall Team Grade: B

s26 - Coyotes Continue Contract Talks (®)

By Chris Baker (COYOTES) On Friday 23rd February 2024 / 5:50pm

GLENDALE, AZ - If and when the Phoenix Coyotes sign Erik Gudbranson to an extension — and it sure seems like it’s going to be extremely soon — they still believe he’s getting better.

With 208 pro games and counting of experience to his name, there’s a temptation to conclude that Gudbranson is who he is. He’s a young defenceman sure, but as a stay-at-home type there’s not much more to expect. You kinda know what you’re getting with him. But he’s probably through the development phase of his career, right?

The Coyotes don’t think so.

If they get Gudbranson to put pen to paper on a contract extension, they’re banking on the 24-year-old still adding to his game.

“He’s the second defender taken in his draft class and in our opinion he’s the best of the class,” said Coyotes head coach Joel Quenneville of the 23rd overall pick — behind Cam Fowler at 15th to Vancouver — in 2010. “It goes to say a lot of things about the way he takes care of himself and prepares for the game he’s got a calm about him that is rare in young players.  Especially young defenders.”

With league insider Elliotte Friedman reporting recently that the Coyotes and Gudbranson had made progress on a contract extension, there is a lot of reason to feel optimistic about the defenceman being around Phoenix for the foreseeable future.

That’s a big deal.

Since turning pro right from the junior ranks, Gudbranson has seen his minutes increase year over year going from just over 14 minutes per game as a rookie to a little over 18 minutes last season to now logging over 20 minutes per game of ice time.

He’s also an impressive plus-32 in his 208 games and has 36 points over that span all the while learning his craft as a second pairing defender on a club with back-to-back Stanley Cup aspirations.

And if he’s still improving … well, that’s the type of guy any team is going to want to keep around.

All indications are that a contract extension is close, but as of Friday afternoon, there was nothing official.

“I’d say probably nothing new to report right now,” Gudbranson said. “My agent has been obviously in discussions.

“I’ve enjoyed my time playing in the desert. I love it here. It’s been great. I’m looking forward to hopefully coming to an agreement soon so I can get back to focussing on hockey.”

Getting Gudbranson signed would be a big bit of business for the Coyotes, who will enter this offseason knowing that they have three key players who can test the open market and unrestricted free agency (Jordan Staal, Eric Staal and Marc Staal). There's also six restricted free agents (Gudbranson, Brandon Saad, Cody Eakin, Nic Deslauriers, Justin Faulk and Adam Larsson) who are also in the final year of their contracts.

s26 - Future Looks Bright in the Desert [WB6]

By Chris Baker (COYOTES) On Tuesday 20th February 2024 / 6:28pm

Experts across the league agree -- the Coyotes have one of the better prospect pools in the VHL.

Potential, of course, doesn't mean anything until it's realized, but if those who look at such things around the hockey landscape are to be believed, there could be some more bright days ahead in the desert.

You could argue the Coyotes have never had a group of young, highly regarded prospects that runs as deep as the current pool, highlighting the strong work general manager Chris Baker, director of amateur scouting Allan Heppel and their group of scouts have done the past few seasons at the NHL draft.

For example, TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger ranked the Coyotes top-10 in the VHL among prospect pools after this season’s Entry draft.

Led by first-rounders Nikolai Ehlers and Roope Hintz, not to mention the likes of second-rounders Anthony Beauvillier, Christian Fischer and Caleb Jones, the Desert Dogs have a bevy of young players who should be making an impact in the years to come. Add in Bo Horvat and Alex Galchenyuk, who are off to very productive rookie seasons in Scottsdale, and there's a lot to like for the Coyotes and their future.

"I think we definitely have one of the better prospect pools in the league," Horvat said. "I'm super excited. A lot of great skill players. We havre a lot of hard-working guys, a lot of guys that want to play in the Show. It's awesome. It's great to see."

Phoenix also boasts an exceptionally young D-corps with the likes of Adam Larsson, Erik Gudbransson, Justin Faulk and Anthony Bitetto who are all 24-years-old save for the latter who is 25.  Sprinkle in the likes of newcomers to the pro ranks in Nic Deslauriers (24), Brandon Saad (24), Cody Eakin (24) and goaltender Juuse Saros (20) and it’s easy to see why the future looks so bright in the gorgeous state of Arizona.

s26 - JVR Dealt to Winnipeg for Brooks Laich ®

By Chris Baker (COYOTES) On Wednesday 7th February 2024 / 5:58pm

PHOENIX, AZ -- James van Riemsdyk was traded to the Winnipeg Jets by the Phoenix Coyotes for Brooks Laich on Wednesday. JVR as he’s known throughout the league had six points (one goal, five assists) in 20 games for the Coyotes this season, his sixth with the organization.

"I’ve had a great time in Phoenix, loved my time here and (have) a lot of good memories," van Riemsdyk said after today’s morning skate. "To join Winnipeg, is going to be a lot of fun. I’m super excited and can’t wait to get started."

Selected by the Detroit Red Wings with the No. 6 pick in the s18 Draft, van Riemsdyk has 132 points (62 goals, 70 assists) in 272 regular-season games with the Coyotes, and 22 points (nine goals, 13 assists) in 47 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The 26-year-old winger, who can become an unrestricted free agent after next season, said he heard about the trade after last night’s 3-1 win over the Red Wings.

Laich had eight points (five goals, 3 assists) in 18 games for Winnipeg this season after having 68 points (30 goals, 38 assists) in 84 games last season.

“I’m excited to come to Phoenix and join the Coyotess,” Laich told the Howlin’ for You podcast Wednesday. “It’s a great opportunity for me to come to a new team, a new city and contribute to the offense.”

The 32-year-old forward was taken 15th overall in the s12 Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals and has 570 points (269 goals, 301 assists) in 883 games spread over four different clubs (Washington, Chicago, Hartford and Winnipeg).  In 104 Stanley Cup Playoff games, Laich has ammased 75 points (38 goals, 37 assists).

“My shot is a strength," Laich said. "I like to be creative in the offensive zone. I feel like I will also be able to help the power play and I’m looking forward to that opportunity.”

The Coyotes (8-8-4) are sixth in the Pacific Division and trail the Vancouver Canucks for the 8th and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

s26 - Surprisingly Good, Surprisingly Bad [WB4]

By Chris Baker (COYOTES) On Monday 5th February 2024 / 6:02pm

With 17 points through 17 games to jump-start the 2015-16 season, the Phoenix Coyotes are off to a rather pedestrian start.  Despite that, the club still has a couple players that are off to surprisingly good and kind of unexpected campaigns.

With an injection of youth all throughout the lineup, coach Quenneville was expecting some “growing pains”.  What isn’t certain though is if he expected his highest paid players to be some of his worst.

::SURPRISINGLY GOOD::

Marcus Foligno [W] 24yrs – 17gp 6g 4a 10p +3

Coming into this season the expectations for Foligno were very much what they’ve been since he officially arrived two seasons ago.  Be strong on the puck, play in the bottom-6, and concentrate on defending rather than looking to generate offense.  To his credit he played the role to perfection chipping in with back-to-back 13 goal seasons and finishing a +3 in both all while never averaging more than 13 minutes per game.

Things changed for the 24-year-old this preseason though.  With the franchise electing to rest majority of its stars during the grueling five day sprint, Foligno was gifted the opportunity to play in the club’s top-6.  He flourished.  With the dress rehearsal fresh in Quenneville’s mind the choice was an easy one when the time came to swap out his young power forward with one of his high-priced superstars.

As it stands, Foligno is averaging a career-high 20:57 minutes of icetime and is on pace for his first 30 goal season.

::SURPRISINGLY BAD::

James van Riemsdyk [W] 26yrs – 17gp 1g 4a 5p +3

For the battles a player like Foligno has had to wage and win to get a sniff in the top-6, James van Riemsdyk has been a mainstay through his first three seasons in the desert.  On the heals of an impressive +25 campaign a year ago to go with 17 goals and 45 points, JVR has been a shell of his former self this season.

It’s easy to point the finger at just how bad the likes of Phil Kessel, Eric Staal and Jakub Voracek have been defensively, but history is on their side in terms of finishing strong and inevitably being the teams’ leading scorers.  For van Riemsdyk things are bad.  His one goal indicates an unwillingness to go to the “dirty areas”, and ultimately has forced coach Q into moving him further and further down the lineup.  Thankfully for him, there’s no real replacement ready to take his spot in the lineup as 13th forward Andrei Kostitsyn was downright awful in his only opportunity this season.
